The purposes of this study were to investigate factors causing cheating during tests, to identify the extent of cheating in primary schools, and to suggest possible solutions that enable to reduce students' cheating during tests examinations. The sample consisted of 106 grade seven students and 47 teachers teaching from 5-8 grade levels who were selected randomly and 4 school principals selected through purposive sampling method. Analysis of the data gathered through questionnaires, interview and test revealed that less than half of students of a class cheat during tests and there are different factors causing cheating during tests such as fear of failure, carelessness of test administrators, external pressure, interest of being perceived as knowledgeable, because other students are cheating, and because of competition. Furthermore, students use different methods to cheat during tests and some teachers do not control cheating. Even some teachers encourage cheating when there is competition and reward among teachers and schools in terms of their student’s t results, both school principals and teachers encourage their students to score high marks by any possible means including cheating. There should be planned and continuous discussion with students, teachers and school principals to bring internal consensus on problem of cheating and honor system should be created in each school so as to bring internal control in each individual. |
