Abstract:
The study tried to examine the existing student disciplinary condition of the secondary schools,
',by identifying the common types of disciplinary problems, the causes and the measures taken by
the schools. To accomplish this study descriptive method was employed .
The study was conducted on 120 secondary school students, 80 Teachers, 15 Principals, 30

Parent- teacher association members from South Gondar zone in five secondary schools. The
d~ were collected from the sam!le respond~nts through a questionnaire consisting seven sets of
items including bio data with close ended and a Jew open-ended questions. The sample was
selected by stratified random sampling ~ethod. The results of the study showed that 26 types of
commonly observed stude t-disciplinaty problems were identified in the schools. Among these

the most serious ones' were cheating_during_ex,.amil!a~, missing classes frequently, disturbing
in the c ass, late coming (tardiness), jumping over the fence, not doing home work, forcing
clever students to give them exam answers, and disobedience to the order of the school and the

The study showed that the disciplinary measures taken in the schools were not effective in
improving the schools disciplines, They wer~ not taken according the rules and regulations of the
schools. The schools, teachers, and parents do not take themeasures cooperatively and also ~he
· school administrators have difficulty in leading the school properly. Finally recommendations
were suggested-based en the results obtained.
