dc.description.abstract revalence, Causes and Consequences of Female Genital Mutilation in Dega Damot Woreda FGM is one of the major problems intensified in the rural parts of Ethiopia. This practice is mainly influenced by cultural beliefs, social. religious and health reasons. FGM causes immediate and long-term complications on the physical and health wellbeing of girls and women. This study assessed the prevalence. causes and consequences of FGM in Rural Kebe/es of Dega Damot Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. The study employed sequential exploratory mixed methods design. In-depth ·interview, FGDs and key informant, and structured questionnaire were employed as an important data gathering instrument for qualitative and quantitative data respectively. A total number of 30 purposely selected participants and 772 randomly selected women who had daughters less than jive years participated in the study. The data obtained from the, qualitative participants were analyzed by using thematic analysis technique 'and the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that FGM is highly prevalent in the study site. Seventy two percent of women reported that their daughters are circumcised. The qualitative study participants were stated that socio-cultural factors, sexual and marriage factors. religious reasons and maintaining good health are the major reasons for practicing FGM Similarly, informants discussed that to be accepted by the community (97:8%), for marriageability (89. 9%) and facilitate fertility (89. 6%) are the main reasons for FGM MW'over. informants identified that FGM has both immediate and long-term consequences on girls and women life such as excessive bleeding, sever pain, hemorrhage, infection, RIV/AIDS and fistula. And 71.2% of respondents supportfor continuation ofFGM Based on these findings, legal campaigns against FGM that allow full community participation are recommended.
