Abstract:
ecause of the need of route selection. Linear P.ngineering Structures (LES) require strategic
ph':'1ing. evaluation and management. The operations ro choose optimum route depends on the
effective collection, processing, storing and analysis of spatial data such as topography.
vegetation, geology, soil type. land use. and landslide areas about land. This situation requires
using of Geographical l11forn1ntlon Systems (GIS) by providing effective data munagcmcm. This
thesis tries to lntroducc a coherent GIS and RS based spatial analysis for the generation of opumat
routings for I.ES and Sflj(dfically for best highway alignment selection into the current
transportation system in Ethiopia.
To obtain an optimum highway mule alignment which is economical, suitable anti compatible with
tl1~. environment, various types uf data have to be considered simultaneously. So that in this research

evaluating all the criteria it is a must that the parameters need to be keep i11 their priority order. This

which uses pair wise comparison (PWC).

parameters after changing all the parameters into raster formal. Because of the complexity of the
problems a number of tools like ArcGfS 9.2, ERDAS Imagine 8.7. AutoCi\D2007 and other
ancillary softwares have been deployed to arrive at the proper solution.
Finally, shortest path spatial analysis was used and a new Highway route or path connecting
Akaki -Kality and Dole sub cities was obtained. The starting point and the destination point were
being determined using handhold GPS. The thesis ll<b sw.:w:xlt.xl in showing th<~ it is possible Lo
On the basis of the findings of the. new highway route .of the study plays a key role in minimizmg
traffic congestion, accident rate in urban areas and for the economic growth of the country, ii is also
recommended thu1 the 11.,e GIS amt RS is more advantageous in terms of time, cost and be
environmentally friendly in analyzing multi-criteria for Highway Engineers and Planners in
selecting an optimum route of I .inear F.ngineering Structures (LES}.
