dc.description.abstract The diversity, relative abundance and habitat association of the avian species was carried out in Apini and Dikuma forest patches in Awi Administrative Zone, North Western Ethiopia from November 2013 to Jun 2014 in the wet and dry seasons. Three habitats based on vegetation cover strata were identified to study relative abundance of avian species using point count methods. Data were collected by direct census through point count method and analyzed using Shannon Weiner, Simpson´s diversity Indices and Sorensen´s coefficient. A total of 95 avian species belonging to 44 families and 11 orders were identified. A total of 93 resident birds of which seven is endemic to Ethiopia, and ten shared between Ethiopia and Eritrea were found .Seventy nine and 83 bird species were recorded during the wet and the dry seasons respectively. Dikuma forest patch had the highest avian diversity during the dry season (H´=3.84) and Apini had the lowest (H´=3.59) in the same season. Habitat association of birds among the vegetation strata during both seasons showed the highest species similarity between forest interior and forest edge (CC = 0.65), followed by forest edge and shrub (CC = 0.62) and forest interior and shrub (CC = 0.3). The species richness and composition are important parameters for stability and functioning of an ecosystem. Therefore, conservation action to minimize the anthropogenic effect at Apini and Dikuma forest patches should be designed in order to maintain avian diversity in the area.
