Abstract:
Family blood feud is a very serious criminal act that caused for loss of many lives in Quarit Woreda. However, the roles of indigenous conflict resolution mechanism in resolving and handling family blood feud has never explored in literature in Quarit Woreda so far. This study aims at to explore this missing gap. To meet the research objectives, the study has employed qualitative approach with exploratory case study design. Indigenous conflict resolution resolves family blood feud that often caused by conflict on resource, musho/mourning ceremony, intoxication and insult. There are two phases of blood feud reconciliation in study area. The first phase held before the perpetrator released from prison to deter counter revenges from the side of victim’s family. The second is after the perpetrator released from prison when he has terminated the date of prison to dry revitalization of family blood feud between conflicting families. The finding of this study revealed building sustainable peace, rehabilitates psychotherapy, reintegrating family and social ties, provides access to social justice and rebuilding trust between conflicting parties are the underlying roles of shemegelena in resolving family blood feud in Quarit Woreda. Beside these, the study explored that having low images by people towards shemegelena, overwhelms by state judicial system, lack of government support and absence of enforcement mechanisms are the challenges that have been encountering shemegelena in resolving and handling family blood in Quarit Woreda. Finally, this study recommended that shemegelena as social capital, should give political, legal and social sensitivity from different stakeholders to deter the revitalization of family blood feud between families in the study area.
