Abstract:
The problems of female domestic workers has not so far gotten the attention of governmental and non-governmental organizations.Hence, the primary objective of this study is to explore challenges and coping mechanisms of female domestic workers in Bahir Dar city administration which will be help full for future social work interventions, further research as well as the means of knowledge on the area.The study is qualitative phenomenology in nature which is basically based on the participants lived experience. In doing this research, 12 participants were selected using purposive sampling technique in combination with snowball sampling technique andthe data were collected through in-depth interview method. For analyzing the findings, thematic analysis method was employed. As the findings of the study revealed, female domestic workers were suffering from sets of problems which includes workload, maltreatment and discrimination,in-sufficient provision of food, confinement and restriction, health problem, low payment as well as sexual abuse. As the response their challenges, the domestic workers used different sets of mechanisms which includesaccepting their existing life and having hope for better tomorrow, ignoring the nagging of employers, sharing their feelings and problems, sometimes using sluggish way of doing tasks to avoidfrom being given additional assignments and running away and searching for the better one. The study come up with its implications that social work practitioners should work in close collaboration with concerned bodies to advocate on the issue of these disadvantaged female domestic workers on their behalf. Moreover, future researches should be done via different study design for the better understanding of their situation which will ultimately contribute for the life improvement of female domestic workers.
