Abstract:
The Awraamba community has its own specific values, assets and lived under a tradition of resource and service sharing system. It provides instrumental, emotional, labor and financial supports for those who need of social supports. This study focused on the description formal social supports of the community found inFogeraworeda South Gonder Administrative Zone. The main specific objectives of this study were identifying sources of social supports; analyzing the sources, investigate process of delivering formal social supports and describing contribution of formal social supports. The study used qualitative approach and case study design with qualitative data collection methods such as focus group discussion, key informant interview and in-depth interview. The study employed 38 participants (24 men and 14 women) for key informant (7), in-depth interview (15) andFGD (16). These participants were selected using purposive sampling technique with the criteria such as knowledge and experiences. The data, collected from these participants, were analyzed using a thematic analysis which was used of categorized data into major and subthemes. The major findings were that Awraamba community provided formal social supports to the people who were in need of it. The sources of these formal social supports were community at large and social networks (families, relatives, friends, and neighbors), social committee and income generated from cooperative works, entrance fee. Social committee is an formal group which was organized to identify individual who has social problems and support them among Awraamba community. Supports were basic needs (food and clothes), labor, advice, emotional, financial and care. Social support process of delivering formal social support is done by identifying individuals who need supports, investigating problems and delivering supports. Its contributions were improving health, security, reducing economic problems, changing community attitude and promoted relationship among the communities and their members. The formal social support in Aweaamba community has advantage for the well-being of person’s under problematic conditions especially elderly, children and disabled. The formal support has its own committee:-Lewgen drash wogen (which is organized and structured by all members of the community).Many elderly health, economy and emotional problems improved children’s who have no one or two parents can learn their education. The study has policy implication at local level, social work education, social work practices and for social work research.
