dc.description.abstract Young children have been joining the prison center with their mothers; and these children are deprived of their liberty and faced different challenging life situations. The main objective of conducting this study was to understand the situation of young children in the prison center living with their imprisoned mothers. Supports for the children, challenging life situation, perceptions of the prison and Grace Staff members about the life of the children and coping mechanisms used by the children and mothers of the children to address their challenges in the prison were explored. The research was applied qualitative approach and case study design. Purposive sampling technique was applied to select the study participants. Primary data were collected through an in-depth interview. The collected data in local language was translated, coded and thematically analyzed. The results revealed that there were fifteen young children living in Bahir Dar City prison center with their imprisoned mother. The children were getting foods from prison administration. Grace Organization supported the children by providing educational materials and sometimes means of communication with the outside community. Catholic Church distributes clothes to the children in the prison irregularly. Though, having the above mentioned services, the children faced with challenging life situation in the prison center. The children or mothers imprisoned with their young children and pregnant women have no special areas. Every movements and activities of the children are under strict control and attention of security guards. While living in the prison center with their imprisoned mothers, the children faced different psychological and health problems. The prison staff members participated in the study suggested the children are facing challenging and strict life situation of prison environment. Grace staffs informed the children are relatively considered as inmates deprived of their liberty and the life of the children was not balanced with those children outside the prison center. To cope up from their challenging life situation, the children and mothers of the children used different coping mechanisms in the prison center. Therefore, the life of the children needs maximum and holistic attention and protection. en_US
