Abstract:
Ethiopia is the owner of various types of vegetations as a result of its divers physiographic
nature. However, there is a great impact on the forest resource of Ethiopia today. Farta woreda
is one of the degraded lands in Amhara region. Studies cannot give attention to create detection
map for forest cover change in their study area. The objectives of this study were to prepare
forest cover map of the study area, evaluate the changes of forest cover, to calculate the rate of
deforestation, and to identify causes of deforestation in the study area. Data collection
instruments of this study were satellite image acquisition, field observation and interview. Simple
random sampling technique was employed to collect GPS points. Whereas purposive sampling
was employed to decide which individuals should have included for interview. Forest areas are
getting declined from time to time and inversely farming lands are getting expanded through
time. The annual rate of deforestation between 1984-1989, 1995-2016 and 1984-2016 were
124.9 ha/year, 233.84 ha/year and 196.4 ha/year respectively. According to the results of change
detection conversion matrix, large areas of forest areas were converted into farming lands and
grazing lands. So, the expansion of farming land and others driving by population growth was
the main causes of deforestation in the study area. Thus, possible remedies were recommended
for the study area.
