Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the management and utilization of school physical
plants of full cycle primary schools in Menz Mama Midir Woreda North Shoa Zone by employing
descriptive survey design. Four research questions were raised for this study. To achieve the
purpose of the study, 10 full cycle primary schools (out of 22 full cycle primary schools in Menz
Mama Midir Woreda) were selected as a sample for the study using cluster sampling method. The
participants of the study were 137 school teachers and 13 school principals were included in the
study. The sampling technique for teacher respondents were proportional stratified followed by
simple random sampling methods, whereas school principals were taken by comprehensive/available
sampling technique. The data collection tools used were questionnaire and observation.
Questionnaire was used to collect data from school teachers and principals. 30 open and closed
ended items were included to collect data from teachers and school principals, and the researcher
had also done observation of schools understudy. The collected data were analyzed using percentage
and chi-square test. The obtained results revealed that the school physical plant components in
primary schools of Menz Mama Midir Woreda were inadequate to carry out effective teaching
learning activities. As the result, the study indicated the existing school physical plants were not also
properly managed and deployed effectively because of insufficient school facilities. In addition to
this, there was no regular maintenance service program and this in turn may affect the quality of
education in the Woreda. Generally, primary schools in the Woreda were not fulfilled the
requirements set by the AREB Primary School Standards. In addition to this, the result of the study
suggested that effective measures need to be taken to meet the standards of the AREB regarding the
school plants in the Woreda in order to provide the expected quality education for the students.
