The people of South Gondar administrative zone are well experienced on the practice of
afforestation of various tree species. This resource is indispensable to human being in every
aspect. Protecting tree and plants is important activity since forests are the source Rivers and
ecological balance. This thesis attempted to investigate the history of afforestation in South
Gondar Administrative Zone. The atitude of the local community and consequence of the
program is also included in the study. Jn the reconstruction of the history of afforestation
program, archival sources were used from Gondar archive center, Secondary source materials
from Bahir Dar University library also exploited. Informants and central statistical authority
(CSA) have been used. In addition to these, observation of the condition offorests that was
planted during the Darg has been the part of the work that I gave great attention. G IS analysis
also used to show the land use/change before the afforestation program conducted and after its
implementation. In the course of the process, preparation of terrace structure, Seedling hole
making and transportation and plantation of tree species were conducted. Mass mobilization for
the rehabilitation of the treeless areas was another remarkable activity of the period. Generally,
the afforestation program is the great achievement of the military Government that able to
develop the culture of planting tree in the locality of the community and making it commercial
crop too. |
