Abstract:
This· thesis entitled Security and Frontier Trade in Ginnir from 1941 to 1991 is a historical
reconstruction of major events existed in Ginnir, a woreda in Oromia National Regional State in
the South Central portion of Ethiopia. The thesis begins with a description and analysis of the
historical background of the described study area and followed by detailed narration on security
and trade in the period being studied. Furthermore, it clearly describes the major pull factors
attracted the population movement and settlements since its incorporation and which reached
climax especially in 1960s and 70s, and how it changed the demography, culture and social
structure of Ginnir woreda. It also emphasized on how these changes brought conflicts which
developed to the 1976 - 78 civil war in the region with its consequences. And also shade light on
the 1978 resettlement scheme in Ginnir woreda. The paper has also detailed the trade routes,
commercial items and the merchants participated in local and frontier trade as well as the legal
and illicit trade in the study time frame.
