Dassie zuria and Kutabar districts. It is to remind the public the contribution of the Literacy
campaign which is on the way of being forgotten by now. It attempts to assess the unique
features of the Literacy campaign; the objectives and the strategies used to implement it; the
challenges faced; the weaknesses and the remedies under taken. The literacy campaign
which was conducted from 1979-1991 had liberated thousands of the peoples of the Awraja
from the black curtains of illiteracy. The literacy campaign did not only enable people to
read and write, but also prepared them to participate in socio-economic and political
activities of the country consciously. In the political aspect, the people of the Awraja were
able to participate as leaders in youth association, women association, in peasant association
at qabale, worada and Awraja level. Socially, the people improved their way of life by
fighting backward traditional activities; by keeping personal and environmental hygiene.
Many of them became government employees by completing their education from different
levels. Economically, the people tried to increase productivity by using different methods of
farming, by utilizing natural resources properly.
