Generally, batteries are classified into two groups. The primary batteries (can not take
place reversible reactions)
and rechargeable (secondary) batteries which can take place
)
reversible reactions. Again rechargeable batteries can be grouped into SLA, iCd,
NiMH, Li-ion
and Li-Polymer. From these rechargeable batteries Li-ion including Li
Polymer
batteries can be found in practically every high performance portable prod
ucts.
Compared to other rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries have a higher cell
voltage, a higher energy density, low self-discharge, very good cycle life,
are environ
mentally friendly,
and are simple to charge and maintain. The difference between the
Li-ion and Li-polymer is a solid ion conductive polymer replaces the liquid electrolyte
paste to lower the internal resistance. The battery life time depends on different
factors such as
battery chemistry, state of charge/discharge, battery temperature and
battery capacity termination level. The rcs of the battery charger control the overall
fault conditions of
the charger circuit. Some of these fault conditions are extreme
temperatures (very low or very high), over voltage, under voltage and over current.
Thermally regulated rechargeable battery chargers can help to keep the service life of
the battery that is specified by the company. This research work investigates these
faults of
battery charger circuit and found possible adjustments so that the cycle life
of
the battery is improved. |
