Abstract:
This thesis asserts the effects of solar activity on CPS ionospheric TEC observed at
Nazareth station in the year of 2011. For the study, the dual frequency signal from
GPS shtellite is recorded at Nazareth (8.568
0
N , 39.291
E) near the deep equator.
These signals coming from the GPS satellite have been analyzed to study the iono
spheric
variation in terms of Total electron content (TEC). These observations were
investigated
and further discussed with an analysis of the midday Disturbance Storm
Time (Dst) index of geomagnetic activity and AP indices, solar radio fiux(F10.7cm)
2011.
In particular, a closer analysis indicated that TEC spikes on Day October
22 with a Dst value of -132nT, and September 22 with Dst value of -101nT around
the Autumnal equinox, August 26 with Dst value of -107nT around summer solstice
occurred during the main phase of the geomagnetic storm. The temporal, diurnal,
seasonal, variation of
TEC and the space weather effect on the variation of TEC also
has been studied and the diurnal variation of TEC shows minimum before sunrise
and after sunset. But this is gradually increasing after sunrise reaches maximum at
between lOUT-14UT. The maximum TEC has been recorded at Nazareth in autum
nal and vernal(spring)equinoctial season; the equinoxes occur around September 22
0
and March 21, when the length of day and night is approximately equal and the sun
is overhead at Nazareth station to provide maximum intensity of solar radiation to
.. its atmosphere where as TEC is minimum in summer season and intermediate value
in winter season.
