Abstract
The main purpose ofthis study was to assess whether there is within sex and between sex difference and
similarities
in attraction, intimacy, selfdisclosure and quality offriendship among the same and cross sex
fri~dship and to examine the general level ofself-disclosure, intimacy and quality offriendship in same

and cross sex friendship ofBahir Dar university students. To this effect the study followed a descriptive
survey method. The study was conducted
in Bahir Dar university main campus undergraduate regular
students.
The sample involved was 378 students/ 189 male and 189female/ which was selected from one
college and six faculties from first year up
to third year's students using disproportional stratified
random sampling methods. The data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed using percentage,
paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test and came up with the following findings;

" proportions ofstudents were formed friendship based on similarity in ethnicity, religion, year
-.levels and departments; Female attraction to same sex intellect and male attraction to same sex

political oridtation attraction and physical attraction ofcross sex friends are the difference of
the two sexes; Both male andfemale was not attracted romantically to cross sexfriends however
male was sexually attracted to cross sexfriends but female not; Female selfdisclosure, intimacy
and quality offriendship are higher to same sex than to cross sex friends. Whereas, there is no
significance difference in male self disclosure, intimacy and quality offriendship to same and
cross sex friends. Thus it was suggested that concerned body ofthe university and stakeholders should
do more to make students of different background to be closure, organize continuously held panel
discussion centring the issue
ofcross sex friendship and enhancing the awareness ofstudent regarding
friendship through presenting brochures, magazine, literature, orientation and discussion
etc.
