Abstract:
~e main objective of this research is to reconstruct the environmental history of Gondar Zuria
Worada in the Twentieth century. This thesis tries examining the relationship between human
interaction with the natural environment in Gondar Zuria Worada in the twentieth century and its
changes. Besides, the research also attempts to investigate the problems associated with
environmental changes. Obviously the interaction between man and nature has brought rapid change
of the t~vironment. The same is true with the environment in Gondar Zuria W orada spec~fically in
the twentieth century. Gondar Zuria was severely -affected by recurring droughts and slowly
advancing desertification process. Deforestation had a great role for the coming of soil erosion,
droug~ climatic change etc. To overcome these problems, a lot of efforts have been made to launch
afforestation and conservation programs by Ethiopian Government Officials, Non Governmental
Organizations, prominent individuals and church men. Between 1941-2000 the government has
carried out a massive planting of seedlings, soil and water conservation scheme through a "Food for
Work" program and others. But the magnitude of deforestation and the vastness of impacts were so
*large. Whereas the success to date; however has on been limited. To conduct this thesis(
Environmental history of Gondar Zuria worada), I used on archives in the then North Gondar Zone
' Administration, Gondar Zuria Worada Agricultural Office (most of its work was primary source),
Addis Ababa National Archives, Gondar University Hospital, North Gondar Zone Orthodox
Tewahdo Church Office, Amhara National Regional State Agricultural Bureau. Beside this, attempts
.. have been made to collect information through interviews from old-age informants. And I also used
published and unpublished sources. Additionally I used satellite Images analysis through remote
'
sensing process.
