Abstract:
The studies of environmental history become a very important practice in the world
particularly after the last four decades. The investigation of environmental history mainly
..
focused on the interaction between humans and nature in the past. Thus, the practice of this
interdisciplinary study is very vital in this dramatically changing world. The practitioners of the
field produced _many research works during the last three or four decades. But, the environmental
history of Ethiopia is n2t well investigated. As part of northern Ethiopia the environment of
Tahuladare Wdrdda was rapidly changed during the last century. In addition the local people of
Tahuladare Wdrdda also experienced a dynamic interaction with the natural environment.
•
Therefore the main objective of the thesis is to undertake a historical survey of the environmental
. ,
history of Tahuladare Warada in the twentieth century. The main focuses of the study are the
~
&he major causes of environmental change in Tahuladare Wdrdda were population pressure,
:- land tenure system, lack of encouraging government intervention and policies. Due to these
factors the environment of Tahuladare Wdrdda considerably has changed in the last century. The
most, important consequences of environmental change in the study area were the growing
decline of agricultural productivity and frequent occurrence of drought as well as other natural
disasters. Therefore, the impacts of environmental change negatively affected the livelihood of
the local people.
Different measures were taken to minimize the problem of environmental degradation in the
study area. However, the attempt of all responsible agents was not equivalent to the intensity of
natural resource degradation. The most important factors behind the failure of these
conservationist activities were political instability, lack of well established government
institutions, inept administration and most importantly ignorant of the primary owners of the
environment, the peasantry. Thus the issue of environmental degradation continued as
unresolved problem of the district, still now. It requires the sustainable and exhaustive effort of
all responsible organs .
