dc.description.abstract The major goals of this research work were to evaluate the land suitability for surface irrigation potential of the Web River sub-basin in Gorobakaksa Woreda through the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) based on GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). Factors including LULC, slope, soil type, soil texture class, depth, drainage, cation exchange capacity of the soil, hydraulic conductivity, available water storage, organic carbon content, soil pH, and distance to water sources were considered in the preparation of the irrigation suitability map. Their influence weights were established using Thomas Saaty's pairwise comparison matrix. Using the weighted overlay tool (for multi-criteria evaluation), the values of each dataset were combined to find the most suitable location for irrigation using the ArcGIS environment. The results of the study revealed that about 1.1% (1,909.43 ha) was highly suitable, 82.2% (143,775.55 ha) was moderately suitable, whereas the remaining 16.7% (29,309.06 ha) was revealed to be marginally suitable. By taking into account suitable irrigable land in terms of the slope, land use, land cover, and physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, the findings of this study can significantly improve irrigable land in the study area. Cropwat 8.0 software was used to compute the water requirement for the proposed cropping pattern. Accordingly, the maximum design crop water requirement (duty) was 0.70 l/s/ha in the months of January and December, adopting 81% overall project efficiency. These findings provide valuable insights for irrigation planning, allowing policymakers and stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding surface irrigation development and the allocation of water resources in the basin.
