Participation in recreational physical activities regularly during childhood and adolescent stage causes significant changes that affect individuals in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparative study on the effect of recreational football and handball participation on health- related physical fitness among preparatory school students. To facilitate this study, some hypotheses were formulated. The study was a quasi-experimental research design and a quantitative research approach was used. A sample of 36 students in Mikrie preparatory school with an age of (FBEG= 18.17±1.115, FBCG= 18.25±1.055, HBEG= 18.50±1.049, HBCG= 18.17±1.169), were taken for the study. Using a systematic random sampling technique subjects were randomly assigned into four groups. Both the experimental football group (n = 12) and experimental handball group (n = 6) participated in the recreational training. However, both control groups do not participate. The variables investigated were cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. Subjects were measured on two occasions: first, before the administration of recreational training as a pre-test, and second, after twelve weeks of recreational training as a post-test. The data collected from study subjects were analyzed using SPSS version 26 software using paired sample t- test and independent t- test to compare within and between groups, at the 0.05 level of significance. The result indicates that recreational football and handball training significantly improved cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition in EG at (p≤0.05). However, no significant improvements were found in all variables in CG (P>0.05). Based on this finding, it can be concluded that twelve weeks of recreational football and handball training has a significant effect on the improvement of physical fitness variables. In addition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, and body composition were more developed in recreational football, whereas muscular strength and flexibility were more improved in recreational handball. Therefore, recreational training method is recommended for people to improve their physical fitness. |
