dc.description.abstract Sustainable building construction is a comprehensive process of design and construction that employees techniques to minimize adverse environmental impacts and reduce the energy consumption of a building while contributing of the health and productivity of its occupants. The aim of this research is to investigate the practiceof sustainability performance during the construction phase in Bahir Dar building construction projects in order to contribute towards the achievement of sustainability. To address the basic research questions, questionnaire surveys research methodologies were employed. The researcher conducted descriptive research using a questionnaire. A total of 54 factors that affect sustainability performance during construction phasewere identified through a deep review of different literature, and listed within three thematic factor groups, namely, economic, social and environmental factors. The mean value was used to rank the factors in the questionnaire survey data, and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to measure the relationship in ranking between respondents who scored for different factors. The collected data was analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. The result show that most of the respondents (59.62%) in Bahir Dar building construction industry are aware the concept of sustainability performance. Findings from the questionnaire survey revealed that consideration of the client’s satisfaction with 4.04 and choosing the right construction method for resource conservation with mean value 3.98 are the major sustainability practices that building professionals are aware of and are being implemented during building projects in the study area. Also r esults indicated that the most influential factors areprofessional fees of engineers and consultants, energy cost and use of full equipment capacity under economic factor; availability of knowledge and skills in the labour force, increased burden on infrastructure as a result of the use and depletion of natural resour ces and public awareness under social factors; and environmental regulations, pollution generation and waste generation are environmental factors. It is concluded that, lack of awareness about economic and social sustainability was found due to the traditional definition of environmental sustainability and the upper and indirect super-vision of consultants to the construction stage. Finally the study recommends education and training programs for building professionals is needed to improve the implementatio n of sustainability practices in the study area.
