The main objectives of this study were to assess the current gender mainstreaming practices in
leading education and to identify opportunities and challenges in mainstreaming of gender
issues in educational leadership at selected government primary schools in Bahar Dar city
administration, at Amhara Regional state. In order to meet these objectives, the study used
qualitative research method and case study research design. Consequently, purposive sampling
was used to select the informants and discussants of the study. The data were collected from
twenty two (I 0 interviewees and 12 FGD) participants. The findings showed that most
participants in the study who are currently working in study schools are clear with the concepts
,
of gender mainstreaming in leading education. But they did not have clear understanding a
bought actions needed to promote on the point that promoting gender equality in educational
leadership position. Opportunities such as policy and legal frameworks, development documents
as well as increasing of female teachers were identified as strategies of gender mainstreaming.
Lack of commitment and attention on the part of decision-making bodies, lack of continuous
access to gender awareness and sensitivity training, attitudinal problems, imbalance division of
labor social-structural factors, and lack of coordinating effort among stake-holders were
identified as the major challenges. Besides, the study schools have opportunities challenges and
practice in their attempt to mainstreaming gender issues in educational leadership. Finally,
recommendations were forwarded based on the major findings so as to minimize the challenge
and fully utilize the opportunities in mainstreaming gender issues in educational leadership in
