dc.description.abstract This study was conducted to analyze the major phytochemicals to evaluate the antioxidant capacities by using, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activities)as well as to determine the total phenolic, flavonoid content and antimicrobial activities of leaf extracts of Verbascum sinsiticum with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol solvents. The percentage yields of methanol, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether extracts were 6.89%, 4.40% and 2.49% respectively. Different bioactive compounds were present in each extracts. The antioxidant potential increased with increasing concentration of the sample. The result of total phenolic content estimation in petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol crude extract was 20.192, 38.231 and 77.538 mgGAE/g dry samples respectively. The result of total flavonoids content estimation in petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol crude extracts was 110, 227.5 and 266.87mgQE/g dry sample respectively. The DPPH the methanol leaf extract showed high antioxidant activity than leaf extract of petroleum ether. The highest IC50 value was recorded in petroleum ether (227.87) and the lowest IC50 wasrecord in methanol extract (63.02) this indicated that methanol extract has higher antioxidant activity than petroleum ether extract. Growth inhibition tests against bacteria showed a good result at a higher concentration in methanol and ethyl acetate extracts, but inhibition zone were not observed in the lower concentration petroleum ether leaf extracts of Verbascum sinaiticum in all bacterial strain. Key words: Traditional medicine, Verbascum sinaiticum, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content, minimum zone of inhibition en_US
