IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL GROUNDWATER AND RECHARGE ZONES IN KEMKEM DISTRICT, SOUTH GONDAR ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE, ETHIOPIA

dc.description.abstract A surge in population growth and the development of institutional sectors in the South Gondar Zone, particularly in Kemkem, occasionally enhance demand for and interest in groundwater excavation. For the sustainable use, development plans and policies of the groundwater resources in the interest area, it is essential to identify the groundwater recharge potential zones and groundwater potential zones. To delineate both potential zones, an integrated strategy combining remote sensing, geographic information system and analytical hierarchical process was used. Nine groundwater and recharge potential impacting elements, including geology, lineament density, geomorphology, slope, soil type, drainage density, land use/cover, rainfall and elevation, were employed for this purpose. These parameters were gathered from satellite and other existing data sources. Arc GIS's spatial analysis tool was used to determine potential groundwater and recharge zones utilizing overlay methods based on assigning weights. During the analysis, the spatial distributions of 5.4%, 84.7% and 9.9% of the areas were classified as low, moderate and high for groundwater recharge potential zones respectively. The southwest with east and north east tip and in some part of east to west and central part of Kemkem has high groundwater recharge potential zones due the high lineament and low drainage density, Cambisols within elevation effect. Due to the steep slope, low lineament, high drainage density and high Aiba basalts, some areas in the south and north tip and east to west part of the area have low groundwater recharge potential zones. Whereas 5.7, 83.2 and 11.1 % of the study area were categorized as: low, moderate and high for groundwater potential zones respectively. Due the high lineament and low drainage density, cambisols within high elevation effect, the south west and north east tip, of the Kemkem have high groundwater potential zones. In contrast, the low class of was located in the south tip, northwestern and northeast with central portion of the area, which is the effect of steep slope, low lineament with high Gradient Mountain conditions with Lithosols and Aiba basalts. However, the moderate class was found in most parts of the study area in both potential zones. According to the validation result, the groundwater potential zone was 69.66% of agreement, indicating good accuracy of the method. ` iv Key words: - Groundwater Potential Zones and Groundwater Recharge Potential Zones en_US
