dc.description.abstract In any applications, Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) induced residual stresses have a higher impact on the integrity of the welded structure. Tensile Residual stress can promote stress-corrosion cracking, brittle fracture, and reduces the fatigue life in service, as well as influences component design due to critical stress concentrations within the component and reduce the service life of the welded structure. One of the most critical factors in weldments is, the development of residual stresses due to localized heating and non- uniform cooling. In this work, simulation has been carried out for the thermal residual stress in multi-pass gas metal arc welding of AISI 1030 carbon steel and their effects were studied by comparing with tensile and compressive strength test results with universal testing machine of the weldment. The thermo-mechanical, transient thermal and static structural analysis was modelled using ANSYS with appropriate Ansys parametric design language coding. The numerical simulation had often been used to calculate residual stresses in multi-pass welded joints of thick plates for its high efficiency and low cost. The effect of temperature and the induced residual stresses of the weldment is observed on mechanical properties of the material. Tensile residual stress have been identified at fusion zone and compressive stresses at heat affected zone.
