dc.description.abstract This study is conducted on “Assessing the Perceptions, Opportunities and Challenges of Political Reform at the Local Level in Ethiopia Since 2018: The Case of Chagni Town.” The main purpose of this study is to assess and explore the perceptions, opportunities and challenges of the 2018 political reform at the local levels of Ethiopia with a particular reference to Chagni Town Administration. Mixed research approach with exploratory and descriptive survey research design was employed in this study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered from respondents and informants through in-depth interview, key informant interview, survey, and document analysis. Respondents and informants of the study were selected using simple random (probability sampling) and purposive sampling techniques. The quantitative data were presented and analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The qualitative data were also presented and analyzed by using content analysis technique. The findings of the study show that the majority of people of Chagni town are not happy with the implementation of the 2018 political reform and they believed that this political reform is not practically implemented on the ground and didn’t address the basic problems of people as it was initially promised and expected. Freedom of expression and speech, freedom of media, improvements in provision of some infrastructures, widening of political space, and independence of justice institutions are the main opportunities of the 2018 political reform. Problems related to government officials, absence of rule of law and order, lack of peace and security, prevalence of corruption and rent seeking, absence of strong accountability and transparency mechanisms, governments failure to keep promises and incapacity to implement decisions, ethnic extremism, nationalism and tribalism, existence of large number of displaced people, inflation and high cost of living, problems related with opposition political parties and public, and weak central government and absence of clear and healthy national politics are also the most significant challenges facing the success of political reform. The study recommends that all concerned bodies and stakeholders should discharge their responsibility with commitment and work together through strengthening cooperation and integration to effectively implement and succed the intended goals of the 2018 political reform in the Chagni Town Administration. . en_US
