Background: An arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. The normal sinus rate has been considered to be between 60 and 100 beats/min; Atrial fibrillation is supraventricular arrhythmia with uncoordinated atrial activation and, consequently, ineffective atrial contraction. It is the commonest arrhythmia in clinical practice, with an incidence that is rising, and significantly affects morbidity and mortality. It accounts for approximately one third of admissions resulting from cardiac rhythm disturbances and it also poses a high risk for complications such as thromboembolism and heart failure. |
