THE REBIRTH OF AMHARA NATIONALISM: CAUSES, MAJOR CLAIMS AND ITS IMPLICATION TO THE POLITICAL DYNAMICS OF ETHIOPIA

dc.description.abstract The main aim of this study was to investigate the causes, major claims for the rise of Amhara nationalism and its implication to the political dynamics of Ethiopia. Amhara nationalism has a different implication for the current and the future overall political activities of Ethiopia in general and to the Amhara in particular. Ethno nationalist movement brought mixed implication on Ethiopian politics and national unity by holding two incompatible and contending agendas in its. These are peaceful coexistence and an agent of stabilizing and a threat and an agent of destabilizing. Hence, Amhara nationalism is a typical example. To achieve the main objective, the study employed a qualitative research approach with exploratory and descriptive research design through dealing with highly relied on primary sources of data; however secondary sources of data were also used. The tools used to collect data were in-depth interviews, personal observation and FGD. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques, a type of non-probability sampling was also used to select the participants for in-depth and FGD. The data obtained from both primary and secondary sources were analyzed through the use of thematic analysis. The finding of the study revealed that anti-Amhara propaganda, Political discrimination, socio-economic state-orchestrated demonic war, Attacks against Amhara, existential threat, government policy and a weak opposition, negative climates of university campuses, Social Media and the international and internal political structure are behind the cause of the Amhara nationalism. Moreover, the finding of the study revealed that the protecting the Amhara people from survival threat, the right to political participation and representation, Constitutional Revision and Restructuring the federal arrangement, identity and territorial claims, equality and good governance, as well as Independent state of Amhara (ISA), are the bold claims of the Amhara nationalism. The major conclusion drawn from the findings of the study reveals that the Amhara nationalism is the political and social movements of the Amhara nationalists to a historic glance to pave a way for self-preservation and assurance of sojourn for the people of Amhara as a whole against the steadily intricating multi-dimensional ranging atrocities prevailing over the years to any anti-Amhara forces.
