dc.description.abstract Speed bump is one of common traffic calming devices used in Road between Addis Ababa to Woldia City, Ethiopia. Due to low construction cost and easy installation method speed bump has widely used to reduce vehicles speed and consequently to decrease potential accidents. However, these speed bumps have installed without proper engineering studies and justification because of lack of detail standard design guidelines and studies about impact of speed bump characteristics on bump crossing speed of different vehicles in Ethiopia. The research study has initiated to develop prediction models to investigate the impact of speed bump characteristics on bump crossing speed of vehicles, to evaluate the effectiveness of selected speed bumps and to develop correlation between bump crossing speed and speed bump characteristics. The research methodology involved selecting 41 parabolic speed bumps based on purposive sampling method on road between Addis Ababa to Woldia City. Bump crossing speed of vehicles were collected using digital video camera. Operating speeds (V85%) at bumps locations were determined for three vehicles classification (motorcycles, passenger vehicles, and single unit truck). Correlation analysis showed that bump crossing speed have significant linear relationship with height, length and spacing between bumps. Multiple linear regression models have developed between the independent variables (height, length, and spacing between speed bumps) and dependent variable (bump crossing speed) for each three vehicles classification (motorcycles, passenger vehicles, and single unit truck). Resulting models showed that significant prediction accuracy to predict the impact of speed bump characteristics on bump crossing speed. Validation of the obtained model indicates good prediction quality on predicting bump crossing speed of vehicles. Road directorates can be used developed models for preparation of detail guideline or determination of speed bump characteristic during speed bump installation. en_US
