The concentration of selected essential and toxic metals (Ca, Zn, Co, Pb and Cd) in Fenugreek
seed (Trigonellafoenum-graecum L) samples collected fromfoursites in a South Gondar Zone
were determined using ICP -OES. A composite Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum L.) seed
samples were collected from four districts in three localites from three farmers in Simada,Fareta
,Libokmekme and Ebinate districts of south Gondar zone, Amhara Regional state, Ethiopia to det
ermine the concentration of essential (Ca, Zn, Co) and toxic (Pb and Cd) metals. The collected
samples preserved in sealed plastic bag before transported to the lab for analysis. Then each of
the composite samples were digested using wet digestion method (hot plate) by applying optimize
d procedure, 0.5 g of Fenugreek seed flour using a total of 12mL mixture of acid was used, in 5:1
(v/v) ratio of HNO3 (67 -70%) and HClO4 (70%), 20 minute pre -digestion and a total of 3:00 ho
urs digestion time was taken at a temperature of about 170o
c.The essential and toxic metals were
analyzed by using inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP -OES). Five
elements were determined, obtained the concentration in the following range: Ca (911 -1363 mg/
kg), Zn (24.1 -50.5 mg/kg), Pb (ND-2.9 mg/kg), Co (0.13- 0.37 mg/kg), But Cd in all sample site
were below the detection limit. The good recovery of metals in range (100_115%) except Ca. The
finding of this study showed that Fenugreek seed contains low concentration Pb and minimum
concentration of Zn and Co, but richin Ca Therefore it is safe for consumers.
