dc.description.abstract Wolaitta Soddo' town, the socio-economic and administrative center for Wolaitta, is located in three hundred thirty kilometers South of Addis Ababa. It is the oldest urban center in the Southern Ethiopia. Lack of attention for local history in Ethiopia, especially, Southern Ethiopia motivated this study to be conducted in Southern Ethiopia. In this study attempts has been made in assessing a history of Wolaitta Soddo town from 197 4 to 2010. In carrying out this work, the method of historical investigation focused on describing and analyzing the historical sources; both ijrimary and secondary through critical analysis and interpretation to their authority and relevance. The study is based on written documents as well as informants. The study has revealed several important points., such as the foundation and early growth, establishments of quarters, urbanization and modernization, pattern of the new settlements, urban social conditions, -- .. facilities, infrastructures, economic activities, rural-urban migration, the town and its environs as well as factors that affected the development of the town. Therefore, the study has attempted to explore such development facts through a historical study of Wolaitta Soddo from 197 4- 2010 as the most important Southern Ethiopian town. .· en_US
