This thesis deals with the socio-economic condition of peasants in East Wảllảga from 1974 to
1991. Though a number of books and researches dealt with the life of peasants, little is known
yet about the socio-economic condition of peasants in East Wảllảga in the time of the Därg.
Therefore, in the process of conducting this thesis primary and secondary sources have been
collected, analyzed, interpreted and integrated as input information, The primary sources for
this study are obtained from archival centers of different institutions such as National Archive
and Library Agency, Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Wäldä Mäsqäl Täriku Archive Center, and
Archive of Wảllảga University as well as Wảllảga Museum. Beside this, information is also
gathered through interview from informants who were willing and had good memories on the
past. Moreover, different documents like books, journals, thesis, dessertations, reports and other
written materials have been used by the researcher to shape the thesis in a scientific manner.
The thesis shows how peasants became land owners and the socio-economic changes made by
the Därg. It describes the formation of rural associations and the subsequent agrarian reforms
of the Därg that affected the life of peasants in between 1974 and 1991 |
