Although Teff grains (Eragrosits (Zucc.) are commonly used in Ethiopia, studies on the chemical constituents of quncho teff grain varieties are lacking in the literature. In this study, the composition of total Phenolic content (TPC) and flavonoids content (TFC) in Teff grain varieties collected from Zegensa, Gongi Zuria, Kore, and Menta Deber sub-districts of Gongi Kolela district were studied. Teff variety (Quncho (DZ-Cr-387) grain collected from each sampling site were extracted using aqueous methanol (80%) with ultrasonic-assisted extractor. Each extract was investigated colorimetrically for TPC and TFC using UV-VIS Spectrophotometer and results were expressed as gallic acid equivalent (GAE) and Catechin equivalent (CE) per 100 gram of the sample, respectively for TPC and TFC. It was found that the total phenolic and total flavonoid of the quncho teff grain variety ranged from 162±10 to 388±26 mgGAE/100 g and 96±4 to 188±7 mg CE/100 g of the sample, respectively. In this study, samples collected from Gongi Zuria sub-district had the highest content of total phenolic than other sampling sub-districts and the sample collected from Menta Deber sub-district had the maximum total flavonoid content as compared to other sampling sites.Menta Deber had the lowest total phenolic content and the minimum amount of total flavonoid content obtained from Kore sub-district.
Thus, teff grains could contribute medicinally important phytochemicals to the consumers in addition to nutritive constituents. |
