Abstract:
A hydraulic scissor lift is used for lifting system in different sectors like industrial, construction and service sectors. These systems are mainly preferred to do maintenance, repair and clean. In Ethiopia the lifting mechanism and uses labor intensive and time consume procedure to do different work on varies working area. One of the several methods that have been proposed is to replace the traditional lifting mechanism by adapting the hydraulic scissor lift machine and design, manufacture with list possible cost and testing its performance by loading and un loading. Since this method of lifting system have easy to operate and create safe working area for workers.
The scissor lift has a hydraulic cylinder bore diameter of 63 mm and 500 mm rod length made of stainless steel, having 2 ports that are connected to the hoses, which provides a hydraulic pressure to push the hydraulic piston. While the scissor arm has length of 1200mm made of MS and the upper plate dimension (1200×800) mm made of MS sheet and angle iron. The total power required to this machine is 1.66 kw (2.22 hp) and the total dead weight is 530 Kg. The result shows that the maximum height the piston rod extend the scissor lift was 4.213m and the maximum load that carry during the operation was 300Kg. Then the total cost of the lift is 27896 ETB which is less cost available on the market. The performance of the machine was tested for its maximum height of the lift and its opening angle, operating pressure measured with digital pressure gage and speed of piston rod. As the opening angle increases, the height of the lift also increased, while the average bending and shear forces were reduced. Increasing the pump flow rate increasing the speed of the piston rod which leads to extend and retract the scissor structures at shorter time.
