dc.description.abstract Solid waste is daily outcome of human activities, which can never stop and collection of Municipal Solid Waste is important in every waste management program. The common problems relating to improper management of waste in the urban area of developing countries includes there is no waste bin along the street and the waste from the house hold is not lifted at regular time intervals. The purpose of this study was a Geographical Information System based model technology for optimized route selection and investigating adequate number and the right location of waste bins for municipal solid waste collection in Gondar town, Jantekel sub-city. This study developed a complete road network and applied a network analyst extension tool, which was useful in the area of optimization of Municipal Solid Waste Collection and Transport. The model uses information on population density, waste generation capacity, road network, storage bins and collection vehicles. The proposed model can be used as a decision support tool by municipal authorities for efficient management of the daily operations for transporting solid wastes, load balancing within vehicles, managing fuel consumption and generating work schedules for the workers and vehicles. Two optimal routes were shown for MSW collection. Two vehicles were utilized to collect about 32 m3 per day in one trip. A total travel distance for one-day transportation was 16.857 km. Hence, the topic of interest should be pursued, especially in developing countries, to enable development of a cost-efficient and sustainable solid waste management system. Further studies are needed to establish route optimization related to time travel cost. en_US
