Abstract:
Water pollution is a global problem and has been evident for long period of time. Hence, the present study was carried out in the reservoir to assess the pollution status of the reservoir. The parameters and sites for water sampling selected systematically based on land use land covers of the area and the location of anthropogenic activities around the reservoir. sampling points were chosen spatially along the water course to reflect a consideration of all possible activities that are capable of affecting the quality of the reservoir water. The grab sampling method was used to assess the spatial variations in water quality across the reservoir. The analyses made for seventeen selected water quality parameters, from July 2019 to March 2020 within 11 sampling station at analysis. The samples were analyzed according to standard methods of APHA (1995). Analysis were done in GIS, SPSS and Excel. The reported data were in compliance with WHO, USEPA and FAO standard. The result indicated that the reservoir has low water quality problems associated with turbidity, TSS, phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, DO, BOD and Chlorophyll-a values which exceeds the permissible limits as prescribed by WHO (2011) and USEPA (2005) standard. Although pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+1, Cl-1, TDS and EC are within the range of recommended limit values, their concentration rises and drops temporally on the basis of seasons. Water quality index of the reservoir ranges from 65.45 to 98.49 in the whole sampling period. These results revealed the reservoir water quality status categorized as from poor to very poor which leads the reservoir water quality deteriorated and not suitable for human consumption. Generally, the result of the study indicates that the status of the reservoir water quality is poor and may not fit for drinking and domestic uses without treatment works but with some great cares and restoration works the reservoir water can be good for irrigation, fishery and livestock watering. Then, prioritized restoration and maintaining actions, particularly, parameters which exceeds above the standard is required in order to improve the reservoir water quality.
