Abstract:
Just-In-Time(JIT) is a practiced philosophy in the construction industry of different countries worldwide. It concerns on delivery of right and the exact amount of materials directly to the construction sites at the time of requirement only. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate whether the JIT materials delivery philosophy would apply to the building projects in Bahir Dar by identifying the potential challenges that hinder its implementation. In the methodology, structured questionnaires, site visits, case study and interviews were used as the primary source of data collection techniques and relevant literature as the secondary data sources. Similarly, the random probability sampling technique was used for population determination and both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis were used. The collected data was analyzed by using Stastical Package for Social Science (SPSS-20) software. The study identified that construction professionals, suppliers and regulators do not have an awareness of JIT and not implemented in their building projects yet. The study also examined that some professionals had an awareness of JIT. Based on the study carried out, delayed delivery of materials is the top identified problem in the current building material delivery system of Bahir Dar building construction projects. Similarly, scarcity of specified materials on the market during the required time and inadequate flow of finance from the client were the top-ranked potential challenges that discourage JIT philosophy implementation.
