Abstract:
Land has considered as a prominent resource for the overall development and provides foodsecurity for all human livelihoods. However, rural land conflict is one of the threats that couldaffect agricultural production and the overall livelihood of the rural communities. The dynamicand unsettled issues of rural land conflict seriously affect the society by exposing to economicproblems and social instability extremely. Having this in mind, this study was carried out to assessthe rural land conflict and its impact on the livelihood of farmers in Konta Special Woreda,
SNNPRs. To achieve the stated objectives of this study, a concurrent mixed method of data
collection and analysis was conducted to address the main objective of the study. This study alsoemployed both probability and non-probability sampling techniques. From which, two-stage
sampling (stratified and systematic sampling) was applied to select households for a survey andpurposive sampling was used to select study area kebele, KII, and FGD participants. Primary data
were collected using a schedule questionnaire, KII, and FGD participants, and also secondarydata were collected using a structured document review mode. For this study, 179 sampled
households were selected randomly, of which 171 respondents, were correctly responded to thesurvey questions. Data collected from the sample was analyzed by using both descriptive and
inferential statistics. The result of this study revealed that 56.1% and 42.7% of the respondents
perceived increasing trends and high extent of rural land conflict respectively. Moreover, thefinding showed that the conflict is prominent on the state-owned and privately owned land in thearea with an agro ecological variation. The results of the Binary Logistic Regression Model shownthat unclear boundary, commonly used grazing area, overlapping ownership, lack of tenuresecurity and inheritance) have predicted to influence rural land conflict at 1% and 5% level ofconfidence. This study also found out that, rural land conflict adversely affects the livelihood ofrural people. The correlation result also revealed that rural land conflict and social and economicimpacts were strongly and significantly associated. Generally, it concluded that as the resultrevealed that, there is a high extent of rural land conflict in the study area, which harms the
livelihood of the communities. Therefore, the study also recommended that government andpolicymakers should take into account the awareness creation to rural people and reviewingvillage demarcations needed to reduce rural land conflict.
