The main purpose of this research was to explore the learning experiences in the Awra Amba
community. To this end, a mixed-method research approach was employed. In addition to this,
the exploratory sequential design has been used. The primary and secondary data were
collected through interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires, and document reviews,
and observation. The primary data were collected through interviews, observation, and focus
group discussions from the research participants including the community founder Zumra Nuru.
Secondary sources of data were collected from documents, literature about the Awra Amba
community, Zumra stories and speeches posted on the wall, and audio-visual materials. From
the total residents of the community (535), 160 (84 male and 76 female) participants were
included in the study. 150 participants were selected by using simple random sampling
techniques and filled the questionnaire. The rest 10 (7 male and 3 female) participants were
selected by using purposive sampling techniques and 5 (4 male and 1 female) participants were
involved in a focus group discussion and the rest 5 (3 male and 2 female) participants were
involved in the interview. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the
data. The major findings of the study reveal that 1) In the Awra Amba community various
learning and training programs were provided by the community and the external bodies as well.
Some of the knowledge and skills acquired by the community members are weaving, customer
care, agriculture skills, elderly care, and so forth. 2) The community members believe that all the
learning and training programs are contributing to the community’s overall development. 3) The
community members also believe that the programs are relevant to sustain and expand the
community’s principles and values. 4) The existing learning and training programs are
considered inadequate by the community. 5) The study has also identified several training needs
of the community. Based on the research findings it can be concluded that in the Awra Amba
community various knowledge and skills are mainly acquired through the informal ways from
families. Therefore, informal learning is the dominant way of learning and acquiring several
knowledge and skills in the Awra Amba community. Based on the findings, relevant
recommendations were forwarded. |
