In most irrigation schemes, because of poor management of the available water for irrigation at system and farm level, water shortage has become more frequent and it’s result reducing yields and incomes of the farmers. This study was conducted in 2018/2019 cropping season to evaluate the conveyance loss and canal managements in case of Golina irrigation scheme. The research was carried out in the main, secondary and tertiary canals. Floating method was used to collect the discharge measurements from the above mentioned canals and inflow –outflow methods used to estimate the conveyance losses, while the selected canals hydraulic parameters was measured by using steel tape. The average water conveyance losses at the main, secondary and tertiary canal level were (1.51%, 0.02 m3//s), (1.74%, 0.022m3/s) and (1.27%, 0.01m3/s) per 100m, respectively. The mean values of water conveyance efficiency of the main, secondary and tertiary canals were 78.8%, 64.9% and 69.07%, respectively. Local farmers were interviewed to find out about the maintenance status, institutional and support service conditions of the scheme. The identified causes of water conveyance losses were mainly due to poor maintenance, lack of cooperation among the water users, leaked and seepage from deformed and oversized canals, overtopping due to canal discharge more than design capacity and growth of unwanted vegetation and shrubs on the edge of the canals. A considerable reduction that was more than 53.5% in the yield (major crops grown) was observed while traveling along the canals from head to tail command area and according to respondent saying. Finally, the performance of the irrigation scheme was poor due to the above mentioned causes. Therefore, to minimize losses, rather than lining of the selected canals by low cost lining materials, maintain and rehabilitating more deformed canal systems are recommended.
