Recording and documenting any day to day activity is important for history and the next generation as being a tangible evidence. On the other hand, non-documented and unrecorded history is not going to have a role than being a Folktale.
It is mentioned that, we Ethiopians except few of us have a problem when it comes to recording and documenting historical happenings. One good example for this in Ethiopia is the transition era between the 19th and the 20thcentury’spolitical and social interaction of a focal person Mohammed Ali who later on became King Michael. Constructed his own castle and related buildings in Dessie City. To date, the building design, materials used and construction techniques have no recorded documents. Having understood the situation, this research was initiated to fill the so long persisted gap. The task was undertaken by paying visits to the place repeatedly and doing visual survey, and employing measuring tools, leveling instrument, photo camera and other necessary materials with which the recordings were done. The data taken from the place were converted to Standardized as Built Drawings by using architectural and engineering software; as appropriate. Throughout the study, various findings had been found. Such as; no structural distress and non- alignment implication is observed relation to the masonry walls on the four sides of the heritage. However, other minor deteriorations are also observed. Due to the heritage ‘s current condition findings, it is strongly emphasized that appropriate conservation approach (preservation and revitalizing) as a historic Living Museum. It is also recommended that, an effort has to be made to help it remain an economic and social inter-action pivotal and prominent land-mark status. The research findings also can be used as an input for UNESCO’s nomination historical heritage registration and recognition. |
