dc.description.abstract If reinforcement bars quality is compromised then the result would be a sudden collapse of structures. Therefore, higher attention should be given to re-bars quality and property. While reviewing literatures compiled in Ethiopia, researches on reinforcement bars are hardly found unlike those made on concrete. Having all these issues in mind, the researcher started reviewing those few researches done so far. Afterwards, the researcher decided to make a comparative study on imported and locally manufactured re-bars. The comparison is on the bases of their properties difference, by conducting mechanical and chemical tests. Five local and one imported sources with diameters of 8 and 12 mms were selected for the mechanical test. Chemical test was performed by taking one specimen from both bar categories. The other concern was the professionals’ perception towards both the sources. This was dealt with by distributing 89 questionnaires to professionals. Additionally, regulatory body’s controlling system for both products was studied. For this specific information, interviews with regulators and actual factory visits were made. Finally, a cost difference between the two sources was studied through reviewing previously registered cost data for the last six months. In availability of data hindered the researcher to make the cost comparison on diameters of 8, 14, 16 and 20mms imported and locally manufactured re-bars. The results show that there are products from both sources that didn’t fulfill the quality requirement stated in the Ethiopian Standard. Under diameter 8mm bars, no statistical difference is found between both products. The imported 12mm diameter re-bar is found having higher yield strength. Regarding chemical composition, there is no significant difference between both products. Local professionals have a good attitude towards using imported re-bars rather than the local one. Regulatory bodies inspect and test both imported and locally manufactured products in common; whereas, certification is done for only local products. The cost difference is statistically significant in diameters 14mm, 16mm, and 20mm re-bars. en_US
