Abstract:
Plastic injection molding is one of the techniques and methodology to create a mold of various complex shapes with more detailed structure. There is a plastic injection molding machine that existing in Bahir Dar University; however, it did not have molding die. There was interest to produce a product that has a Bahir Dar University logo on its cover using this machine.
The objective of this is to design and fabrication of two plate mould tool and analyze the material flow of the selected product. This describes the material flow analysis to analyzed the material flow in the part and identify the best gate locations of the components by Mold flow adviser 2018 software. The structural three dimensional solid modeling of two plate mould was developed using the Solid Work drawing software. Design all molding components related to machine specification, space limitation and weight of a product. The material selected for BDU logo was Polycarbonate. Total stress created by force, temperature and fluid on parting plate and cavity were approximately 67.8 MPa. The total capacity of a machine that shot in one cycle for specific polycarbonate with a volume of 547 cm3 approximately 595.8 g is needed and the total weight of 8 products with runner and sprue was needed approximately 54.6 g. The performance test was conducted. One product was produced due to cost limitation by close 7 cavity at runner side. Though weld-line air-rape defects have seen during simulation, however, the product was acceptable regarding functionality of a product and visualized after produced a product which has no defects happen on product. Therefore, the designed and fabricated mold die can used to produce a product having Bahir Dar University logo and its feasible.
