Abstract:
At different level, the reported irrigated cropland coverage is overreported or underreported compared with actual irrigated crop land. There is a tendency to believe in official statistics as the right one, however, this always leads to incorrect planning and decision-making process.
The main objective of this study was mapping and monitoring of irrigated croplands on the Amhara regional state of West Gojjam zone, the case study Jabi Tenan Woreda areas and Lake Tana sub-basin using earth observation satellite data.
The application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System has been increased to study and address the various issues relevant to the irrigation agricultural information derived from the satellite data forms the basic input for the study. In this research, a work has been taken up for inventorying and monitoring the irrigated agriculture land and land use/land cover in Jabi Tenan Woreda and lake tana sub-basin is explained.
The identification of irrigated areas is essential for crop inventory and monitoring, in dry lands. The standard approach is to use supervised classification and unsupervised classification on spectral bands, vegetation indices (NDVI). This overview of the studies to date indicated that remote sensing-based monitoring of irrigation is at an intermediate stage of development at local scales in irrigation period of 2014, 2015 and 2016 of single date Landsat 8 with 30m resolution images. Additional there was a field survey data of irrigated cropland for validation of the proposed methodology in this study. For this study as results revealed, total of Irrigated cropland covers was 13.4 % and 17.4% in 2014 and 2016 irrigation season respectively for Jabi Tenan Woreda and 11.4%, 11.15% and 14% irrigation period of 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively of lake tana basin. The methodology and obtained result can give a preliminary indication on the amount of irrigated cropland information that can be saved and be used for additional development works. This can be a great input to the decision makers and planner, investment related works and future plans.
