Irrigation development has been identified as an important tool to stimulate economic growth and rural development, and is considered as a cornerstone of food security and poverty reduction in Ethiopia. This study was conducted to performance evaluation of Aswa Guder and Zuma small scale irrigation scheme. The Aswa Guder and Zuma irrigation scheme designed command area was 120ha and 88ha whereas the actual irrigated area was 95ha and 75ha respectively. Overall activities in primary data collected included: field observation, discharge measurements by Valeport current meter, soil moisture determination before and after irrigation and depth of water applied at the field using 50mm parshall flume and interviewing beneficiary farmers. For household survey questionnaires a total of 52 and 22HHs sampled were randomly selected from head, middle and tail end user’s respectively. Secondary data were collected from secondary sources. In order to evaluate the irrigation water use efficiency of the scheme, six farmer fields were selected from the schemes in relation to their location: at the head, middle and tail end water users. The study was carried out from November to Marche 2017/18. Performance of Aswa Guder and Zuma irrigation scheme were evaluated using some selected internal indicator (conveyance, application and overall efficiency) and external indicator (water use, physical indicators and irrigated agricultural)). From the analyses the conveyance efficiencies were found to be 55.83 and 58.05%, application efficiencies were found to be 53.16 and 56.82%, overall efficiency were found 29.68 and 32.986%, The water supply ratio were found as 1.03 and 3.04, irrigation supply were found to be 1.24 and 2.55, Aswa Guder and Zuma respectively. Further, from the analysis of physical performance of the scheme, during the study period, irrigation ratio of the scheme was 47.44 and 65.22%, sustainability were found 79.06 and 85.71% respectively. Majority of the respondents, 52% in Aswa Guder and 50% in Zuma, reflected that the maintenance condition of irrigation infrastructures was bad and medium respectively. From the respondents 47% in Aswa Guder and 67% in Zuma described that illegal water abstraction accounts the primary cause for unfair water distributions. Generally, the performance of the irrigation scheme is poor. Therefore, scheme monitoring, capacity building of the users and the water user associations, providing the flow control measurement structures, adequate operation and maintenance of the system are required to improve the irrigation scheme performance. In general, based on the assessment carried out, Zuma irrigation scheme performed better than Aswa Guder scheme. But there is still a room for improvement of the performance of both schemes.
