Abstract:
The study was conducted onJedeb and Kulech small scale irrigation schemesin east Gojjam zone of Amhara Region with the objectives of evaluating and comparing the performance of those schemes using internal and external performance indicators. For the achievement of the objective primary and secondary data were collected.Based on primary and secondary data collected, internal and external performance indicators were analyzed. From the analyses of the internal performanceindicators, the average conveyance efficiencies at Jedebwere found 57.81% whereas at Kulech irrigation scheme average conveyance efficiency were found 96.24% for lined main canal and 65.93% for unlined secondary canals. The average application efficiency of the selected fields at Jedeband Kulech irrigation schemes werefound as 61.16% and67.27% respectively. And also the average storage efficiency of the selected fields at Jedeband Kulech irrigation schemes were 59.28% and 56.11% respectively.Overall irrigation efficiency of the schemes was found as 35.36% for Jedeb and 54.55% for Kulechirrigation scheme. As a result Kulech irrigation scheme has good overall irrigation efficiency where as poor overall scheme efficiency for Jedebirrigation. And also the analyses of external indicators showed that relative water supply (RWS) and relative irrigation supply (RIS)at Jedeb scheme were found1.46 and 1.14respectively and 0.85 of RWS and 0.76 of RIS were for that of Kulech scheme. That indicates high amount of supplied water than the demand at Jedeb and relatively low supplied water relative to the demand at Kulech scheme.Analyses of agricultural performances showed that1,711.51$ per Unit cropped Area, 491.81$ per Unit Command Area, 0.117$ per unit of irrigation supply and 0.362$ per unit of water consumed were found for Jedeb irrigation scheme. Whereas 2,420.88$ per Unit cropped Area, 1,966.66$per Unit Command Area, 0.251$ per unit of irrigation supply and 0.497$ per unit of water consumed were found for Kulech irrigation scheme. Furthermore, 0.29 and 1.82 of irrigation ratios were found for Jedeb and Kulech schemes respectively. And also 0.45 and 0.81 of SIA were found for Jedeb and Kulech schemes respectively. In general, based on the assessment carried out, Kulech irrigation scheme performed better than Jedeb scheme. But there are still a numbers of problems that needs remedial measures for improvement of the performance of both schemes.
