With increasing the number of infrastructures related to irrigation, special attention should be given for their performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performances of the two irrigation schemes through internal and external performance indicators. For this purpose two small scale irrigation schemes Shiny with design command area of 30ha and Gota with that of 66 ha from South Gondar zone, Amhara, Ethiopia were selected and evaluated individually using internal indicators and compared each other based on selected external indicators. To achieve the objective primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data collection includes discharge at diversion point, canal discharges, soil moisture before and after irrigation. The secondary data includes metrological data, command area, crop types, total yields, prices of irrigated crops, area irrigated per crop per season. The internal indicators include conveyance, application, storage, and overall irrigation efficiency. To determine application and storage efficiency, nine farmers’ fields from Gota and six farmers’ fields from Shiny were selected. From the analyses of the internal performance indicators, the conveyance efficiencies were found to be 77.89 and 57.75% and application efficiencies were found to be 63.74and 79.36% for Gota and Shiny respectively. And the storage efficiency values were 24.39 and 34.55% for Gota and Shiny respectively. The external indicators included were relative water supply and relative irrigation supply for water supply, output per (cropped, command, water diverted and water consumed) for agricultural, and irrigation ratio for physical performance. The results of relative water supply were 3.16 and 1.45 the value of relative irrigation supply were 4.48and 1.47 for Gota and Shiny respectively. It is better to increase the command area at Gota. The output per irrigated and output per command area (land productivity) found to be 160 and 147.88 and 280 and 93.33 quintals/ha for Gota and Shiny respectively. Output per unit irrigation diverted and output per unit water consumed results were 0.016 and 0.0418 and 0.081and 0.0640 quintals/m3 for Gota and Shiny respectively. The irrigation ratio of Gota was 92.4% and that of Shiny was 33.3%. Based on the result of overall efficiency (49.65 for Gota and 45.83% for Shiny), Gota small scale irrigation scheme performed better than Shiny. But Shiny scheme had better storage and application efficiency and higher water productivity.
