dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)is one of the most important vegetable crop that belongs to the family Solanaceae and genus Lycopersicon. The major factor contributing to reduced tomato productivity is soil fertility depletion caused by continuous cropping without addition of adequate and proper fertilizers ,nutrient loss through soil erosion and leaching Therefore, afield experiment was carried out at Delemo primary school, to evaluate effect of organic, inorganic fertilizers(DAP and urea), blended (compost with inorganic) and control in the growth, fruit yield and quality of Roma VF tomato variety .The treatments were arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and replicated three times. Growth data were collected at 30, 60, and 90 days after sowing (DAS) and yield related data at last. The results of the present study revealed that the different fertilizer applications produced a statistically significant effect on the growth and yield of tomato. The highest growth and yield performance of tomato plants was found in those treated with compost followed by inorganic and blended fertilizers. Accordingly, higher plant height, leaf numbers/plant, number of branch /plant, stem diameter were recorded under compost treatment. Similarly, higher single fruit diameter, single fruit weight , total and marketable fruit number and fruits weight per plant, plot and hectare were obtained in tomato plants treated with compost due to the gradual release of different types of nutrients as a store house of plant nutrients and promotion of enhanced vegetative growth and also influenced the yield product. The study also showed that use of inorganic fertilizer had better effects on growth of tomato plant at 30 days ,this due to the better nutritional environment in the root zone for growth and development of the plant, there is no need of direct decomposition as the nutrients in mineral fertilizers are relatively high and the release of these nutrients is quick and Nutrients are soluble and immediately available to the plants. untreated plants were obtained reduce tomato growth and yield value were could be due to poor physical structure, chemical composition and biological properties and reduced moisture holding capacity of the soil .Therefore, application of compost is significantly affect for growth components plants becomes aged ,better productivity, good fruit yield quality and economic profitability(net benefit )and compost fertilizer application is recommended for tomato production in the study area.
