Resistances to antibiotics by infectious diseases causing bacteria increased the mortality rate. This problem is caused by the shortage of effective treatments. The development of new antibacterial agents with novel and more efficient mechanisms of action is an alarming medical need. Therefore, in this work, two complexes of cobalt (II) with Arrhenius acid formula of H2[Co(R)2] and H2[Co(R)2(phen)] were synthesized from deprotonated resorcinide alone as well as from both deprotonated resorcinide and1, 10phenanthroline. The complexes were characterized by spectrometry (ICP-OES, FTIR, UV/Vis, 1HNMR, ESI-MS) analysis, Solubility test, pH test, melting point and halide content test. The in vitro antibacterial activities of this complexes were tested on two Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes) and two Gram negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia) and the results were compared with the activities of commercially available reference antibiotic drug (Gentamycine). Based on the analytical and spectroscopic data, the complexes were proposed to have square planar geometry for the H2[Co(R)2] complex and octahedral geometry for that of H2[Co(R)2(phen)]. Antimicrobial studies showed that there is increased antimicrobial activity of the metal ion on coordination to the ligands. Interestingly, the complexes demonstrated unusually better activities than the reference drug even on the Gramnegative bacteria. Therefore, after cytotoxicity investigation protocols, these products could be considered as alternative solutions for the problems caused by pathogenic bacteria.
